As December approaches, I find myself looking back on the year—not just the wins but the messy, in-between moments too. It’s been a whirlwind, and as much as I want to dive into plans for 2025, I’m trying to slow down and reconnect with what really matters—my values.

This shift started with a conversation I recently had with a friend. He’d been offered an amazing job opportunity—the kind of opportunity that makes you pause—but he turned it down without hesitation. His reason? They didn’t fit into his life right now. I was floored (and honestly a little envious). The way he calmly said no felt so freeing, and it got me thinking: How often do I rush into things because they seem great on paper, without checking if they’re right for me?

That question has been especially loud lately as I face big changes at work. My contract is coming to an end in a few months, and while I know new opportunities will come, the thought of asking myself, What do I want? feels like a bigger challenge than just taking what’s offered.

In moments like this, I try to journal. I say “try” because I don’t always manage to keep it up every day—some evenings I’m just too tired, or life (or Netflix🙄) gets in the way. But when I do carve out the time, even for a few minutes, it helps. I reflect on small, everyday moments—what energized me, what drained me—and use them to uncover what really matters. These little moments, pieced together, show me what my values are.

For parents, I think this process is even more important. Life can feel like a constant juggling act, and knowing your values makes it easier to decide where your time and energy should go. It’s helped me navigate tricky decisions, like deciding which work projects to take on, which playdates to skip, or how to navigate the holiday social calendar. Knowing my values has made it easier to say no, even when saying yes feels tempting. And each no, I’ve realized, is a yes to something better aligned with who I am and what I care about. Of course, I don’t always get it right, but when I do make decisions that align with my values, it feels so much lighter.💡

If this resonates with you, I’ve created a free worksheet with prompts to help you identify your own values. It’s simple, takes just a few minutes, and can be a great tool to get started.

And if journaling isn’t your thing, no worries. I’ve also been using the Healthy Minds App lately. It’s free, science-backed, and feels like a little mental reset button on the go. The sessions are short and flexible, offering a mix of active or sitting meditations paired with brief 6-minute lessons on mindfulness-related themes—including values.

This December, I’m reminding myself (and you🙃) that we don’t have to have it all figured out. Just taking small steps to reconnect with what matters can make a difference—not just for ourselves, but for the people we love. Clarity on your values could be the best gift you give yourself this year. 🎁

Here’s to a grounded, meaningful festive season. 🎄

Warmly,

Alexine xx
